Handover of Keys to the Beneficiaries of six prefabricated housing units in Sombor

handover-somborSombor, 22 December 2015 – The beneficiaries of the six prefabricated houses in Sombor received the keys to their new houses today. The keys were handed over by Sasa Todorovic, Mayor of the City of Sombor, Mr Nicola Bizel, Head of Operations of the Delegation of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Serbia, representative of the Commissariat for Refugees and Migrations of the Republic of Serbia, and Milos Terzan of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in a ceremony held in Ive Andrica street, settlement Aleksa Santic in Sombor.

The six prefabricated houses for the families accommodated in the informal collective centre Aleksa Santic in Sombor have been built within the framework of the project “Support to the improvement of living conditions of forced migrants and closure of collective centers“, financed by the Delegation of the European Union to Serbia.

The City of Sombor, as an investor, provided the construction land with adequate infrastructure in the Ive Andrica street. The Commissariat for Refugees and Migration is coordinating the process of closing the collective centres. UNHCR and its implementing partner Vizija will provide technical and financial support, main design, installation and equipping of the houses.

Six beneficiary families: five refugee families and one domicile socially vulnerable family now have the right to use the houses but and not to purchase them.  Thanks to this project, these six households have been ensured conditions for a decent life now. The houses are equipped with basic furniture and appliances.

The total value of construction works and equipping of the houses is EUR 105,000.

This Project is part of a more comprehensive program funded by the European Union supporting improvement of living conditions of forced migrants – “For A Better Life”, with the total value of 14.2 million euro.
